The Club was formed in 1971 to promote and engage in the study
of geology by means of lectures and field excursions, and to encourage
the preservation of areas of geological importance. Professional
qualifications in geology are not a pre-requisite for membership.
Although the study of geology is our primary aim we take a serious interest in
plants, birds and animals that are encountered on our excursions, and the cosmos in general.
Activities
Through the co-operation of professional geologists the Club
has a programme of lectures which are held at 7.45 pm on the second
Thursday of each month, except December and January, in the Mawson
Lecture Theatre, Department of Geology and Geophysics, University
of Adelaide. Usually there are prelecture activities, beginning at 6.30pm, which may include
mineralogy workshops or geological videos.
Day excursions to areas of interest around Adelaide are held
on a monthly basis (by bus or car) and are led by professional
geologists. Longer camps, sometimes at interstate localities,
are held at Easter, in August or September, and on some long weekends.
Details of all excursions are published in the Club's monthly
Bulletin and members are encouraged to publish reports
of lectures and field excursions in the Bulletin .
The Club is a family club and children are encouraged to attend
both lectures and excursions to learn more about their environment.
However, as field trips are often to old mining areas, quarries
and clifftops which are inherently dangerous, children should
be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times for their own
safety.
